bIZI. LA BELLEZA DE MONTAR EN BICICLETA ( LIFE. THE BEAUTY OF RIDING A BIKE )
It is an exhibition of paintings, installations and objects created by the visual artist Kike Ibáñez, with the fundamental idea of sharing the beauty that he sees in the bicycle and the act of using it.

La ayuda sobrenatural
Supernatural aid
195 x 260 cm.
Acrylic on canvas.

In Colmenar del Arroyo, on my Uncle Claudio's estate, there was an open-air corridor, inhabited by vines and magpies, between the wall that surrounded the entire property and the lawn that led to the pool. Eduardo was holding the bike, with the training wheels freshly removed. My childhood self sat on it. Ahead of me, a path leading to an experience I will never forget, because learning to ride a bike is like learning to ride a bike: you never forget it.

El cruce del primer umbral
The crossing of the first threshold
195 x 130 cm.
Oil and acrylic on canvas.

Whenever I start something, I get terrified—I'm scared of the first day of school, starting a new job, or going on a blind date. I remember the first time I stayed for lunch at school. I cried as I watched my mother leave, knowing I wouldn't be eating at home. I remember that feeling of not returning home when the bell rang, and the door that separated me from the room where the children who stayed for lunch at school waited.

El vientre de la ballena
The belly of the whale
360 x 190 cm. Triptych
Acrylic on canvas.

I crossed the door that led to the room where the children who stayed for lunch were, and that image still captivates me today. Hundreds of children playing, the celebration of life—my fear vanished in an instant. I thought my mother had left me alone, but that scene was far from loneliness.

El encuentro con la diosa
The meeting with the goddess
130 x 195 cm.
Acrylic on canvas

The process of creating each bIZI painting is as follows: I research the corresponding stage of the hero's journey. For example, *The meeting with the goddess*. The first image that comes to mind is the one I keep, the one I start working with. In this case, the image that came to mind was the representation of a virgin with my sister’s face. The next step is to find a connection between that emerging idea and cycling. Amateur and professional cyclists have three fundamental patronesses: the Madonna del Ghisallo, the Lady of Dorleta, and Notre Dame des Cyclistes.

La tentación
The temptation
130 x 195 cm.
Acrylic on canvas.

In the craft of painting, willpower is essential to work when no one is forcing you. Often, you have to face temptations of a practical or hedonistic nature that could lead you away from your path. That’s why it’s important to enjoy the process, making it more pleasurable than any temptation.

La reconciliación con el padre
The reconciliation with the father
195 x 130 cm.
Acrylic on canvas.

When I was a child—around 7 years old—I was sleeping one night and dreamed that I was going to participate in a bicycle race. I could choose whichever bike I liked best to compete. If I won the race, I could keep the bike I had chosen. By some turn of events, I was in the lead. I took the final curve, raced up a ramp, and leaped over a white SEAT 127. Just at that moment, suspended in the air and about to cross the finish line first, my father woke me up: "Kike, wake up, it's time for school!"

El cruce del umbral de retorno
The crossing of the return threshold
195 x 130 cm.
Acrylic on canvas.

*The crossing of the first threshold* was the first painting I made, and in keeping with the circular nature of this project, I painted the same piece again, 9 paintings and 2 years later.

El hombre de los dos mundos
The man of two worlds
130 x 190 cm.
Acrylic on canvas.

I usually get around the city by bike. I ride to work on an old red Peugeot road bike from the ‘80s. Together, we dodge potholes, cars, and motorcycles; we reach the door, climb the stairs, open the door, and enter the studio together.

Abanicos ciclistas
Cycling fans
160 x 90 cm.
Acrylic on paper.

Birds fly in formation to save energy, with each individual flying behind and beside the bird in front to avoid headwind and take advantage of the draft created by their companions. Additionally, every so often, the bird in the lead drops back to the rear of the flock to recover its strength. A fan is the formation that a group of cyclists draws to shield themselves from crosswinds. For example, if the wind is blowing from the right, each individual will try to position themselves on the left side and slightly behind the cyclist ahead to advance with less effort. I call this coincidence between cycling and nature (life) bIZI.
